Christmas Cookies

cookies…red & green & white sprinkles & icing of all colors covering the shapes of Christmas trees & wreaths & angels & ornaments & stars & gingerbread people with their colored candy buttons & icing faces & the gingerbread house on the table

flour dust covering each surface, remembering the mixer against the glass mixing bowl & beating the yellow egg yokes into the batter & the brown swirl of the vanilla as it blended

the mixer sits off to the side, paddles licked clean from the icing it mixed from flour & butter & sugar / empty food coloring bottles sit on the counter lying sideways / baking trays sitting on top of the stove, still warm from the oven

cookies laid out on parchment on the table / bright edible ornaments of joy & laughter & of memories
